What is ClipWiki?

ClipWiki is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that lets you clip text, images, and links from webpages and organize them into a personal wiki. Save clippings into custom books, search them, and export them as HTML files (Pro version).

How do I use ClipWiki?

Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons site. Right-click text or images on a webpage and select “Clip to Wiki,” or use the “Clip” button in the extension popup. Organize clips into books, search clips, or export books (Pro version) using the popup interface. Upgrade to Pro for advanced features like custom books, search, and dark mode.

What are the differences between the Free and Pro versions?

Free Version: Clip content, save to a default book, delete clips, and view clips.
Pro Version: Create and delete custom books, move clips between books, search clips, export books as HTML, and enable dark mode.

How do I upgrade to the Pro version?

After purchasing a Pro license at https://barrygardner.gumroad.com/l/trszml Open the ClipWiki popup, click “Enter License Key,” and input your Gumroad license key.

Functionality Questions

How do I clip content?

Text or Images: Select text or images, right-click, and choose “Clip to Wiki.”
Full Page: Open the popup and click “Clip” to capture the main content of the page (if supported by the page’s structure).

Clips are saved to the current book (default is “Default”).

Why are some images not clipped?

Some images in mixed selections (text and images) may not be clipped due to browser-specific handling of the DOM. Firefox’s selection mechanism might exclude images, especially if they’re partially selected, lazy-loaded, or in complex structures like <picture> elements. To fix this, ensure you select the entire image or use the Chrome version, which handles these cases more reliably.

Can I clip entire webpages?

Yes, if no text or images are selected, ClipWiki attempts to clip the main content (e.g., <main>, <article>) of the page. If the page lacks a recognizable main content area, you’ll see a message: “No content selected.”

How do I organize my clips?

Use the dropdown in the popup to switch between books (Pro version).

Pro users can create new books (“New” button), delete books (“Del” button), or move clips between books (“Move” button).

How do I search my clips?

Pro users can click the “Search” button in the popup, enter a search term, and view results in a temporary “Search Results” book. Switching to another book clears the search results.

How do I export my clips?

Pro users can click the “Export” button to save the current book as an HTML file, which includes all clips with their titles, URLs, and content.

Troubleshooting Questions

Why does clipping fail on some pages?

Complex Page Structure: Some pages lack a clear <main> or <article> element, or content is dynamically loaded and not accessible.
Permissions: Ensure ClipWiki has access to the page .

Solution: Try selecting specific text or images, or refresh the page and retry.

Why does the context menu not appear?

The context menu only appears if text or images are currently selected, ensure you’re right-clicking on the selected text or images. If the “Clip to Wiki” option is missing, check that the extension is enabled and reload the page.

Why can’t I use Pro features?

Verify you’ve entered a valid Gumroad license key in the popup’s “Enter License Key” section.

If validation fails, check your internet connection or contact support (See Support section below).

Why does the export feature not work?

Ensure you’re using the Pro version and the current book has clips.

Check that the browser’s download settings allow saving files.

If you see an error like “Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘download’)”, ensure the downloads permission is enabled in the extension.

Why does the popup look different in Chrome vs. Firefox?

There may be slight UI differences due to browser rendering. Both versions function the same.

Privacy and Security

What data does ClipWiki collect?

ClipWiki stores clips (text, images, URLs) and settings (e.g., current book, dark mode) locally on your device using IndexedDB. Pro version license keys are sent to Gumroad’s API for validation. No other data is collected or shared.

Is my data secure?

Clips are stored locally and not sent to external servers.
License validation uses secure HTTPS to Gumroad’s API.
Content is sanitized with DOMPurify (purify.min.js) to prevent malicious code execution.

How do I delete my data?

Delete individual clips or books using the “Delete” button in the popup.
Uninstall the extension to clear all IndexedDB data.

Which browsers are supported?

ClipWiki supports Chrome and Firefox. Ensure you’re using the latest version of the extension and browser for optimal performance.

How do I update ClipWiki?
